‘Stop This Nonsense Right Now’ – Here’s Why Boston’s Mayor Had To Tell People To Stop Jumping Out Windows

This is without a doubt one of the strangest press conferences we've ever seen...

When your city has a giant snow dump, you’ve got to make the most of it. You may not be able to shred your local streets, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had – as the people of Boston have been finding out in the past few weeks.

The Massachusetts city has received a pow dump of seven and a half feet since 23 January, the second-biggest snowfall in their history, and it’s still coming down as well.

So, what have the Bostonians been doing about it? They’ve been doing what any self-respecting snow-fanatic would – jumping out their windows into heaps of snow, filming it, and putting in on social media with the hashtag #BostonBlizzardChallenge.

The videos make for hilarious viewing, as you’ll have noticed in the clips posted above and further below in this feature, however, mayor Marty Walsh is not having such a good time, and he’s given his people a right telling off in a recent conference. “There’s something going around on Twitter where people are jumping out of windows onto snow banks,” he said. “First of all, that’s a foolish thing to do, and you could kill yourself.

“So I’m asking people to stop their nonsense right now. These are adults, jumping out of windows.

“This isn’t [New Hampshire ski resort] Loon Mountain, this is the city of Boston, where we’re trying to remove snow off of the street, and it becomes very dangerous.

“The last thing we want to do is respond to an emergency call where somebody jumped out of the window because they thought it was a funny thing to do.”

The press conference really does make for an entertaining watch. Mayor Walsh doesn’t look like he can quite believe what he’s saying himself, and the tone of pure disbelief translates beautifully into online comedy.

Anyway, on our behalf, we’d like to give a big pat on the back to everyone in Boston who is keeping the fun alive. Jumping into snow is hilarious. Keep up the good work.
