Climbing Legends and Cycling Champs Set for Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival This Weekend

...from climbing chaos to skiing sensations and everything in between

The 13th Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival is set to hit the Scottish capital this weekend, and if you live outdoors and love all things wilderness, you’re going to need to get along.

Split into five sessions taking place across Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February, the schedule features everything from first ascents of daring routes to Brandon Semenuk’s famous ‘One Shot’, a look at the life of the late Dean Potter and a feature on a skier who goes only by the name of snowflake. Pretty diverse then.

There’s more acclaimed and award-nominated films in there than you could throw a stick at, and best of all, you’ve probably never heard of the majority. The fest is sure to get you hyped up on life and stoked for your next adventure.

Each session at the EMFF features a series of carefully selected and highly-rated recent films, with speakers also featuring at all but one of the sessions.

Andy Kirkpatrick

Special guests include Andy Kirkpatrick on Saturday night, an award-winning writer and adventurer described as “climbing’s answer to Sir Ranulph Fiennes”, taking on subjects from a lifetime of soloing to tackling some the toughest rock faces in the world.

Kirkpatrick will follow on from the Saturday afternoon session with Jon Griffith, a session dedicated to all things climbing for everyone who loves the sport, with Jon talking about his 10 years spent photographing some of the most stunning first ascents in the world.

Sunday will see 2013 British mountain bike champ Lee Craigie lay down the secret to her sporting success and talk through an unsupported off-road traverse of the French Alps on a fat bike, before Dave MacLeod rounds the festival off exploring the fear and experiences that come with a decade of terrifying world firsts.

The Sunday morning session is new for the 2016 EMFF, and though without a speaker, is designed to be family-friendly. It features a 90 minute schedule made up of six short films which we can guarantee you are absolutely rad.

Festival director Stevie Christie, Festival Director, explains: “We have 6 fantastic adventure films to screen at this 90 minute session. It’s definitely not just for kids as the films are awesome and you won’t want to miss them. But we’ve selected these films for this session because there are no adult-themes or swearing in the films, making them suitable for all to enjoy.”

“Whether you are a committed outdoor enthusiast or more of an armchair fan, or if you simply enjoy hearing enthralling stories set against incredibly beautiful scenery, there is something for you at the EMFF. And if you wish you could have adventures like the ones you see but can’t find the time in your life, we even have a short film which tells you the solution!”

Tickets are available for the EMFF from their online website, with tickets for individual sessions going for as little as £6 and a weekend ticket available for £48.

Check out the EMFF site for more on those tickets and for the full programme of events, to take place at the George Square Lecture Theatre at Edinburgh University.
