Is This The Future? Danny MacAskill Drops a 360° Virtual Reality Video on the Roofs of Gran Canaria

The stunning directional tool feature makes the viewer the camera man...

When most people hear ‘virtual reality’, they think of a film, a video game or another universe altogether, possibly one in which car drivers aren’t so angry all the time and where people don’t get on a train and take up an entire table for themselves.

So, when we tell you that what we have below is Danny MacAskill in a virtual reality clip, we feel that it might be important to clarify that the Scottish trials star has not in fact been cast in a new Hollywood sci-fi flick. As great as that would be.

No, what we’re talking about is the new ‘virtual reality’ craze that’s slowly but surely becoming a thing in the world of action sports, largely down to the camera boffins over at GoPro. What it basically means is 360 degree video – video where you can use a directional tool to look around during the footage.

This kind of thing is best used for exploring, in our view. There’s little use in using this for a downhill mountain bike race for example, where if you blink in the wrong direction you’ll lose track of the action, or indeed for most other forms of competitive action sports.

But the prospects of virtual reality/360 video within the adventure market are huge. Imagine being able to hike to the top of a mountain and look around with Travis Rice, explore previously untouched trails in the middle of nowhere with Andreu Lacondeguy, or indeed, explore a new city from the rooftops with Danny MacAskill.

That’s exactly what you can do in the feature below, after GoPro released this awesome footage from the roofs of Gran Canaria with D. Mac, a bonus feature of sorts from his stunning ‘Cascadia’ video. Watch, explore, enjoy, share.

…and in case you missed the rest of the footage to drop from ‘Cascadia’ thus far, take a look below. You’re in for quite the treat.
