How cool is this? A Dutch designer has created a glow-in-the-dark cycle path in the Netherlands.

Daan Roosegaarde used 50,000 luminescent “rocks” to create a 1km cycle path. The pattern is based on Vincent Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night and is located just a few miles from where the Dutch artist used to live.

However, these aren’t actually rocks, they’re chips covered in a smart coating that is connected to a nearby solar panel. Energy collected during the day makes the pathway glow at night.

Roosegaarde wants to make this special coating as versatile as possible, so it could glow brighter, be switched off and used for road markings, adapting to ever-changing urban spaces.

Pretty rad, no?
