‘There’s A Reason No One Has Ever Been Down There’ – This Guy Made The Trip To The Edge Of A Lava Lake

Playing with fire: the ultra-HD GoPro journey to the Ambrym Island lava in the South Pacific...

Geoff Mackley is a bit of a mad man. The New Zealand born photographer and film maker makes a living out of chasing storms, and when he’s not doing that, he tends to play with fire – literally.

Yup, that’s right. Mackley teamed up with GoPro recently to take the new HERO4 to the edge of the Mt. Marum lava lake on Ambrym Island in Vanuatu – a small island in the South Pacific Ocean. The resulting 4K edit is pretty surreal.

Mackley has invested nearly £250,000 on trips to the island over the past 17 years to try and work out ways to rappel down to the lava below and get some amazing first hand footage while he’s at it.

Against adverse weather conditions, unbelievable danger and ignored warnings, he journeyed down to the lava lake with fellow New Zealand snapper Bradley Ambrose. The duo became the first people to ever ground their feet so close to the fire.

When you watch what came out of their efforts, its not hard to see why they worked so hard to make the dream a reality.
