Living in a van, travelling around the world and having adventures – it’s basically the dream.

We’ve never considered however, that a home that runs off petrol is not so great for the planet.

Ching and Jerud and their dogs Tybee and Tyki decided – like many before them – to quit their nine to five lives and hit the road, but they’re doing it with one big difference.

Using a mix of vegetable oil and solar power, they live an almost fossil fuel free life.

“One of the biggest downsides of traveling in an RV is fossil fuel usage, we can’t justify driving around the country burning diesel at 10 mpg,” say the couple on their site, Live Small Ride Free

They stop off wherever they want and spend as much time as they can exploring mountain and swimming in wild lakes

“We realised how much we could do with an RV if we remodelled it into a home that matches our priorities.”

Rebuilding their RV to be a green home on wheels, they bought a waste vegetable oil (WVO) powered truck to tow it along.

Their remodelled truck now has 1220 watts of solar panels and the pair use a composting toilet.

These two additions power the entire RV and decreases the amount of water they need and reduces water waste.

The couple have been living an travelling ‘off the grid’ for around 100 days so far and are going where the road takes them.

They stop off wherever they want and spend as much time as they can exploring mountain and swimming in wild lakes.

Currently driving across the US, they have no set plan for where the next few months will take them. Follow their adventures on their blog here.
