Here’s What Happened When A 19-Year-Old Landed The Biggest Front Flip In Mountain Biking History

Tom van Steenbergen may be young, but he's got giant balls and a crazy trick bag...

On June 25th last year, mountain biker Tom van Steenbergen landed the biggest front flip in mountain bike history. Not bad for a 19-year-old, is it?

The stunt was part of Tom’s filming for unReal, the upcoming Anthill Films and Teton Gravity Research project which has given us no other option than to expect all out insanity.

The team behind the film have been running a few short ‘making of’ episodes in the run up to the release, and the latest takes us behind the scenes on Tom’s 70-foot front flip stomp. If you haven’t seen the original clip before, get excited. It’s every bit as ridiculous as it sounds.

“I thought I was going to die if I didn’t land it,” he admits, in the backstage episode. “That was as scared as I’ve ever been. I don’t even remember the run in or anything – I just remember the landing and being so stoked. I’m so stoked to be alive.”

It’s certainly not hard to decipher the fact that he’s stoked when his wheels touch down safely and he starts screaming. To be fair though, Tom does have a history of going big and bailing hard, as showcased at Rampage last year when he tried to front flip the 72-foot canyon gap and came up just short.

The dude seems as shocked as we are that it’s all gone well this time around, so a big round of applause to Mr. van Steenbergen for even having the balls to give it a go in the first place. May a long and successful life in the wonderful world of mountain biking await.
