Street trials rider Danny MacAskill became known to the world after releasing a five-minute YouTube video in 2009 that showed off his riding style and immense depth of talent - 33 million views later, and Danny is now a monster player in the industry having worked as a stuntman on the Hollywood blockbuster Premium Rush, and made an appearance in a Volkswagen TV advert.
He released a new video in 2011 called “Way Back Home” under the production of the Red Bull Media House, which shows him revisiting his roots on a trip back to his hometown of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye. Once again shot by flatmate Dave Sowerby, the video has earned him a further 28 million YouTube clicks.
He first began using his bike to jump on neighbours’ walls as a precocious 11-year-old and it wasn’t until 2006 that he moved to Edinburgh to practice his riding. The decision has certainly paid off - the huge success of his breakthrough video allowed him to give up his job as a bike shop mechanic so he could ride full time.
Now riding for Red Bull and Inspired, Danny continues to push the boundaries of street trials with videos featuring bike stunts never previously performed anywhere else in the world. However, he remains relaxed about his unique skills - “I really enjoy just going out and playing,” he says. “Whenever I'm on my bike I feel like a 13 year old kid again - that's all the motivation I'll ever need.”
