Dusty Payne showed his versatility throughout the grueling 2009 ASP World Qualifying Series, securing top results in all conditions, and solidifying his position amongst the top 15 in the ratings at the very last event on the calendar with a Final berth at the ASP 6-Star PRIME O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach. In doing so, he became the first Maui native ever to qualify for the ASP World Tour. In his first year in the elite division in 2010, he finished 24th overall, and he went on to finish 32nd in 2011 and 32nd again in 2012. Despite struggling with injury in 2013, he did manage to secure his first tour victory, the ASP Prime Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. Born on 27th December 1988 in Wahiawa, Oahu, Dusty is now based in Lahaina, Maui, and calls Honolua his training ground. He first came to prominence as a free-surfer, and still finds the time to star in video parts including Creepy Fingers, Modern Collective, and Julian Wilson’s Scratching the Surface. "You've got to free-surf to compete,” says Dusty. “If you just compete all year, you'll go loony.” Surfing with a regular stance, Dusty is a progressive mastermind who describes his favourite wave type as ‘big barrels’. His reputation as one of the world's finest free-surfing talents is continuing to grow and his blend of innovation and Hawaiian-style power surfing will ensure he performs well in competitions over the coming years.
