Wonderkid Gabriel Medina became the talk of the world tour in 2009, when, at the age of just 15, he nailed two perfect ten point rides in the under-16 final of the Quiksilver King Of The Groms event. The following year, he won the under-16 category at the Rip Curl Gromsearch at Bells Beach, Australia. However, he really burst onto the world stage in 2011, when, in his first year on the elite tour, he notched up world title victories at the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco and the Quiksilver Pro France at Seignosse. He finished his debut season in 12th place overall, and was named ASP Breakthrough Performer of the Year. He continued to progress in 2012 with a seventh-placed overall finish, and he picked up a victory at the ASP Prime Nike Lowers Pro. Born on 22nd December 1993, Gabriel’s training ground is Maresias, Brazil. He began surfing at the age of nine, and two years later he won his first championship at national level, a stage of the under-12 Rip Curl Gromsearch, held in Buzios, Rio de Janiero. From there, his progress was rapid, with victories including the Brazilian Amateur Championships. Few surfers in the world today can boast such a repertoire of aerial manoeuvres as goofy-footer Gabriel. And he is not only able to combine two or more aerial reverses, aerial 360s and ‘superman’ manoeuvres on the same wave, all day long, but he is also able to do it heat after heat in a competition environment.
