One of the pioneers of the Free Ride movement, mountain bike legend Richie Schley continues to pave the way for young rippers. Now 38 years old, he provides exposure for his sponsors, which include Whistler Blackcomb and Rotwild, while also acting as an ambassador for the sport and a consultant on several levels within the industry. Together with fellow free ride stars Wade Simmons, Joe Schwartz and Matt Hunter, he also runs bike camps for intermediate riders. However, he still finds the time to travel around the world wowing crowds with his riding which he describes as ‘flowy, jumps and style’. In 2012 alone, his busy schedule included the Sea Otter Classic, the iXS Dirt Masters Festival, both Crankworx events, the Freeride Festival in Saalbach. Austria and Redbull Rampage in Utah. Born in Whistler, Canada, Richie grew up riding the trails of British Columbia, but his first taste of the big time came in 1993 when he won the Pro Class at the Canadian BMX Championships. Today he rides cross country, all-mountain, Enduro, Freeride/DH and even road bikes - at the end of the day he says he ‘just loves to ride’. Fitness and healthy living are a big part of his focus as he passes on his passion to the next generation. “Being in nature and having adrenaline rushes and thrills with people that love the same things are what life is all about for me,” he says. “Life is about taking chances and having adventures, so get outside and do both!”
