Troy Lee is the main man behind Troy Lee Designs, the Californian company responsible for providing many of downhill mountain biking's biggest names with protective headgear. What began as the hobby of a motocross racing teenager who painted helmets in his parents' garage for his friends, has grown to become recognized as the premier custom helmet paint shop in the world.
After 30 years in the business, Troy's company has now expanded into a full force operation, offering a product line from helmet visors and graphics, to casual wear and racewear. It also now makes some of its own helmets instead of just painting them, and makes its own clothing rather than just designing it.
Born in Pasadena, California on 27th January 1961, Troy was born into a family crazy about racing. His grandfather raced at Bonneville, and his father raced motorcycles, so it was only natural that Troy would become involved too. And although he says he is most passionate about motocross, he is behind the paint job on the helmets of many of the world's leading racers in every category.
Troy Lee Designs had its own mountain bike team in the 90s, and Troy still finds time to go out riding two or three times a week, often with his four children on his favourite trails near Laguna Beach or Whistler. "I was a DH guy," he says, "but with the new XC AM technology I’m enjoying normal XC trails right now."
