10 Brands That Have Defined Skateboarding

Skateboarding has progressed thanks to the companies that push it forward

The Zephyr surfboard shop in Santa Monica, and the skateboard team it started almost accidentally, represents the first real brand in skateboarding. Allen Sarlo, Jay Adams, Tony Alva, Chris Cahill and legend Stacy Peralta were known as the Z-Boys. By the time they arrived at the Del Mar Nationals in California in March 1975 — the biggest skateboarding comp at the time — they had reached California cult status.

Their pool skating further revolutionised skateboarding in the summer of ’77 (with Alva doing the first aerial), and such was their popularity Zephyr couldn’t hold onto their stars. The surf shop closed and the Z-Boys went onto make skateboarding what it is today.
