After what seems like an eternity the UCI Downhill World Cup circuit is back and firing on all cylinders. Following an off-season that saw some major team changes and much talk of the young guns coming of age the top four looked a lot like last year, with the ever consistant Greg Minnaar taking the win on homesoil by the narrowest of margins ahead of 2011 World Cup overall winner Aaron Gwin. Reigning World Champion Danny Hart took an uncharacteristic fall at the top of the course while Red Bull's Brook Macdonald took himself out of contention with a nasty crash earlier in the week. Yeti's multiple 4X World Cup winner Jared Graves made his intentions clear with a 6th place finish while Australian National Downhill Champion Troy Brosnan maintained his strong form of 2011 finishing 8th. Touted by Dirt Magazine's Mike Rose as one of the best World Cup races of all time, round two of the 2011 World Cup at Fort William was the race that saw Danny Hart and Brook Macdonald realise their potential. On one of the most physically demanding tracks on the planet, the diminutive Hart, riding for Giant Bikes put in the run of his life, missing out on the top spot by just 1.299 to Santa Cruz Syndicate's Greg Minnaar. Having won the previous race in Pietermaritzburg, Trek's Aaron Gwin gave his peers the fright of their lives when he went through the split 5 seconds up but a mistake put him back into fifth place. It's been a long time coming but Finally 3 is finally here. The 2011 UCI World Cup ushered in a new era in downhill and a new generation of talent. With Trek's Aaron Gwin dominating race after race, the old order could only look on while the new order stepped up their game and showed their worth. Specialized's Troy Brosnan coasted straight into the top ten alongside the UK's Danny Hart, who saved the best till last and let it all hang out at the World Champs in Champery, producing a run that rivaled anything that had gone before it. New Zealand's Brook MacDonald, at just 20 years of age, showed his mettle in 2011 and together with the Syndicate's Josh Bryceland has proven himself more than capable of taking a win. Who would have known what 2011 would bring back in Peitermaritzberg, South Africa in April of last year?

Josh Bryceland 2nd place finish at MSA!

New school is in session and Josh Bryceland (Santa Cruz Syndicate/SRAM/ RockShox) joins the ranks of the youngsters making headlines with his second place finish today at the UCI World Cup downhill at Mt. Ste. Anne, Canada, which is his first world cup podium! This comes on the heels of his win at the Halo BDS UK national race last week in Llangollen, Great Britain where he is also leading that series. After a first place qualifier Greg Minnaar was poised for a win but made an uncharacteristic mistake in the rocky woods which sent him over the bars and netted him an 18th place finish. Steve Peat finished 15th, which was a frustrating result for him.

Mont Sainte Anne has been without a doubt the most physical and challenging race of the season so far. The very long track certainly favours those athletes who are both physically tuned and technical. Rain and mud, this year, have made things, if possible, even more difficult for the riders. However the stress was also felt by the bikes. The fast and rocky traits, combined with mud have seriously tested all the bike and their parts. Punctures, flat tyres, bad falls, broken chassis, brakes on fire and more and more, the race put everyone and everything under real pressure. Even the top players like Minaar and Atherton suffered under these extreme conditions. The race ended up punishing every little mistake and every indecision. In summary this was an unforgettable race.
