My adventure of a new route on Bruderliebe, Marmolada – Hansjorg Auer

Opening a route on a mountain is just more as the final day, on which you will free the line. For sure this is the most important day, because all the effort, the invested time, the preparation and so on is coming to an end. Many things are coming together to this magical point, which you will feel on the summit during shaking hands with your friend. It was my brother Vitus, with whom I shared this moment and to whom I should speak out great thanks. He was supporting me nearly the whole time. He was hanging on the belay for hours, during which I was battling my way up, looking for climbable features and placing protection. As a synonym, the new line is named „Bruderliebe“ and I am really happy, that I got the opportunity to carve 19 pitches along this nice piece of rock and to add coincidentally another page to the climbing history of Marmolada south face. FACTS: _ Name of the route: Bruderliebe _ Area of the route: Pilastro Dorso d’Elefante, Marmolada South Face, Belluno, Italy. _ 19 pitches, up to the grade 8b/8b+. Total vertical gain on rock: 800 meters _ Protections: Camalots up to #3, pitons, bolts only where necessary _ Character: Amazing line on slightly overhanging terrain on the lower part. The upper part is wild and alpine with some loose rock on the last pitches. _ First ascent: August 21st 2011 in 11.5 hours _ First ascensionist: Hansjoerg Auer with his brother Vitus Auer _ Time spent to open the route: 8 days over e period of two months for the lower section. Muy Caliente With James Pearson

After being away from the UK trad climbing scene for a couple of years, where he mainly sport climbed, James wanted to go back to his specialty and decided to attempt to flash for the first time an E10 route, Pembroke’s Muy Caliente. Considering the dangerous aspects of trad climbing, James’ intention was to sharpen his trad skills with training on other on-sight climbs in Pembroke before attempting Muy Caliente. He started with the on-sight ascent of Point Blank (E8), 19th April 2011, a long and sustained wall climb with good spaced gear and big air potential. Then the next step was to flash Daddy Cool (E8), a bold slab on Carreg y Barcud in North Pembroke. The third ascent was a route in the narrow zawn of Huntsman’s Leap, From Dusk Till Dawn (E8). Following this, James was introduced to his current favourite route in Pembroke, the project wall that would become the new route: Do you know where your children are? (E9). It was time for James to finally flash Muy Caliente and the first stage of the process involved watching his friends climbing on the route and trying to remember as much information as possible. Unfortunately the flash attempt failed at the last move: “That empty feeling in my belly told me I was falling. I screamed and swore. The dream was dead” – James explained. Less than twenty four hours later he was back at Stennis Ford, ready to try again. ‘The run-out was fine, and I arrived at the gear pretty fresh. The rest holds before the crux were soon in my hands. This time there was no hesitation, my body locked the position, my hand reached up to the edge, it was finished!’ – commented James. The initial project of James turned into something else: while he focused on flashing Muy Caliente, he completed the route on his second attempt ‘ground-up’ and made four different hard routes and even opened a new one.

200 years ago, on August 3rd 1811, the brothers Johann Rudolf and Hieronymus Meyer from Aargau, Switzerland, climbed the first four-thousand-metre peak in Switzerland, the Jungfrau mountain. 200 years of exciting mountaineering history followed. Celebrating its 150th anniversary itself, Swiss mountaineering specialist MAMMUT commemorates these extraordinary jubilees by organizing the Anniversary Basecamp and kicking off the Biggest Peak Project in history on August 3rd 2011, exactly 200 years after the first ascent! The highlight of the camp is the joint ascent to Jungfrau summit (4,158 m). In order to celebrate the anniversaries in an authentic way, one of the teams tackles the climb in historic clothes and gear!
