Dumont has faced challenges in his skiing career. While he achieved early success, winning a gold medal in the superpipe at the Winter X Games at the age of 17, he suffered a serious injury not long afterward, fracturing his pelvis in three places and rupturing his spleen as a result of an overshot jump. However, he recovered from this potentially life-threatening injury quickly, getting back on the slopes two months later and going on to medal several times at subsequent Winter X Games.
As a result of his skiing prowess, Dumont has earned business success as well. Dumont is currently sponsored by such companies as Toyota, Target, Red Bull, and Nike. He is also the owner of Empire Attire, a clothing company that he started in 2008, and sponsored a skiing contest called the Dumont Cup for young skiers in 2009, awarding a $10,000 first prize.
Among Dumonts other interests is car racing. In 2009, Dumont participated in a Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup race, finishing 19th in a car sponsored by Red Bull, one of Dumonts corporate sponsors. He has expressed interest in pursuing professional racing after the conclusion of his skiing career, which he believes will wrap up within the next few years.
Simon Dumont's Career Achievements
Dumont has won four gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal at the Winter X Games in his skiing career, with all but one of his medals coming in his signature event, the superpipe. The additional medal was a gold in the Big Air competition in 2009. He has also competed in halfpipe events.
Perhaps his greatest career achievement came in 2008, when he set the quarter pipe height world record after suffering massive falls while attempting the same feat previously. Dumont aired 35.5 feet on a 38 foot quarter pipe as he engaged in a cork 900 tail grab. He set the record on his home course, Sunday River, in his hometown of Bethel, Maine.
