About Backside 180

The backside 180 is a variant of the Ollie. Alan Gelfand invented the Ollie in 1978. No one is sure of the first person to perform a backside 180. Its origin is said to come from the “Dogtown” era of skateboarding. In this era, backyard pools were popular skate spots, and after people starting getting air out of the pools, they would turn their bodies 180 degrees. Since then, the backside 180 has expanded its popularity to include use in street skating, vert skating, and mini ramp skating. This trick can be added to many tricks to improve the appeal of it. Some variants include the backside kick flip 180, and the backside heel flip 180.

To perform this trick, the rider should set up as they would for an Ollie. The back foot should be on the tail of the board, while the front foot should be somewhere in the middle of the board. The front foot should be perpendicular with the skateboard. The rider should then begin to pop the Ollie. While doing this, the rider should wind their arms around their body in the opposite way that they are planning to turn. They should then pop the Ollie and untwist their arms. This should propel them into a spin. After spinning 180 degrees, they must land the trick.
