This will give any skier nightmares

Tree well’s are responsible for 20% of skiing deaths – screengrab: Winston Goss

Heart-stopping footage has emerged of the moments a father rescued his son from suffocating in the snow in what would have been a horrific skiing accident.

Skier, Winston Goss was having fun with his son Ethan in the Brunage Mountain backcountry, about 100 miles north of Boise, Idaho earlier his year.

However, during a run, Ethan got a little close to one of the trees, and found himself burried headfirst in deep snow. Fortunately, Ethan’s dad was higher up the mountain, and close enough to hear his son’s wild screams as the snow around him moved in, trapping him in position.

In what must have ben a terrifying experience for both parties, Winston acted quickly, getting to his son in seconds, and rescuing him from the snow. The footage shows that Ethan wasn’t buried very deeply, yet the snow around him was sufficient to prevent himself from getting free.

Happily, the swift actions of Winston saved his son’s life and, within just minutes, Ethan was back on his feet, if somewhat shaken up, ready to head off down the mountain again.

Ethan’s near death experience is evidence that tree wells are something that all skiers, snowboarders, and anybody enjoying the backcountry should be aware of. In fact, tree wells are responsible for 20 per cent of all ski deaths.

Nothing is as useful as practical experience, should you ever be unfortunate enough to either be the victim of a tree well, or be riding with somebody that’s found themselves in trouble. However, our guide to surviving tree wells offers some useful information that you need to know before venturing off piste.
