Big Air skiing involves skiers catching as much hang time and air as possible. To do this, skiers typically use giant jumps.
Height and hang time may satisfy normal humans, but not competitive big air skiers. For them, the object is to move through the air with style, grace, flexibility, fluidity and with a seemingly complete disregard to personal safety. Tricks involve twisting, flipping, crossing skis, waving appendages and ultimately landing. To be a successful big air skier one needs a combination of, and in no particular order, skill, imagination and courage.
Simon Dumont is the reigning king of the big air skiers. He captured the gold medal in the 2009 X-Games big air challenge. Dumont won the competition by completing a double front flip with a misty 1080 combo. To win the gold Dumont had to beat out three other of the world's leading big air skiers Jon Olsson, Jacob Wester and PK Hunder.
