About Off Piste

Off-piste refers to skiing or snowboarding in an area that is unmarked or outside the bounds of any regulated area. Often this takes place in areas that are ungroomed as well as unmarked, causing this type of winter sport to be exceedingly dangerous. Although off-piste skiing provides the opportunity for fresh powder and new lines, the snow pack of the area is not monitored and there is an increased likelihood of avalanche occurring. One of the best areas for off-piste, or backcountry, skiing within the United States can be found at the resort of Jackson Hole in Jackson, Wyoming. Providing skiers and boarders alike with the possibility of a multitude of off-piste opportunities, Jackson Hole can be seen as one of the better off-piste skiing areas in not only the United States, but also throughout the world. Off-piste skiing, although dangerous at times, provides seasoned winter outdoorsmen the ability to take their sport to a new level.
