About Shred

Snowboarders are notorious for going fast and that's what shredding is all about. The first snowboard was called a snurfer, a surfboard for snow, and was made by Sherman Poppin for his kids to use. The modern snowboard that riders use today was first developed by Jake Burton. As snowboarding began to catch on, so did speed, and snowboarders have been shredding since the beginning of the sport. Shredding is just a style of snowboarding that involves riding aggressively or tearing up the terrain.

When a snowboarder rides down the mountain at a screaming fast pace, he or she is shredding. The rider works intensely at carving or slicing the snow hard and low, ripping powder as he descends. Carving is turning so that the edge of the board is firmly set in snow and the lip and tail of the edge follow that same path. Carving creates a thin line in the powder as the rider heads down the slope. Shredding is an art that requires experience, confidence and a touch of insanity.
