When it comes to surfing you really dont think of vert style tricks like you do with skateboarding. The thing is that it is far from the truth. Air in surfing is just like it is in skateboarding: it is when the surfer is able to launch off of the crest of a wave. Sometimes they can come back down and other times it makes for one awesome looking wipeout but either way, a surfer can definitely get some air.

As far as air being a surfing trick, it is simply going up a wave and launching yourself and then coming back down. It is more difficult to get air on a surfboard because of the constant moving and awkward shapes of waves. In skating you have a sturdy ramp. Catching air with a surfboard is alot more difficult than with a skateboard.
