About Barrel

Can you do a barrel? Not a beer keg, but a surfing barrel? If you are a surfing fan then you not only know the definition of it but also how hard it is to actually do it. Most dictionaries define the word 'barrel' as it pertains to surfing in this manner; The sport of riding the edge or on the crest of a wave. Specifically while standing and/or lying on a surfing board. The trick being to ride along the tunnel of a wave, also called surfboarding. What the dictionary won’t tell you is that this is one of, if not the hardest and most dangerous feats to do in the sport of surfing. It's not just the timing of riding the 'barrel' or wave that is important, it is also staying with it. You've seen those huge waves and the opening that forms as the water rushes to the shore. Inside that hole, that crest is where most surfers want to be. The problem is the timing has to be in perfect coordination with the wave itself or you will miss it. Pro surfers spend their entire career searching for that perfect 'barrel' that will take them to the annals of the immortals.
Mistiming a barrel can be very dangerous and even lethal for some. You are riding inside the wave! It is as if riding in the middle of a tornado. You can spin around with no problem, but if you go too much to one side or the other, you will be thrown amiss along with the other stuff that has been swallowed up. Once you are thrown from a barrel, you can bounce in the water for ever as you are in the midst of the raging wave. Nevertheless it is what every surfer dreams of.
