Big air is a term used for a surfing trick. Generally it is used when a large amount of space or separation comes between a surfer and the water or snow. The term is used in several sports, such as BMX, motocross riders, snowboarders as well as by snow or water skiers. It is also used by skateboarders or bikers. Virtually any sport that uses a vehicle to jump high may talk about catching "big air" in a good jump.
Surfing competitors use a jump or ramp to launch themselves into the air. The idea is to propel yourself and your board (or other vehicle) as high above the ground as possible. While in the air various tricks are performed and scored by judges. A clean landing at the end is a large part of the full trick. Usually the more complex the full trick the higher the score.
