John John Florence (HAW), 19, has won his maiden ASP ASP World Championship Tour event, taking out the Billabong Rio Pro over Joel Parkinson (AUS), 31, in barreling three-to-four foot (1 metre) waves at Barra da Tijuca. Florence, currently in his rookie year on the ASP WCT, proved unstoppable on the final day of Billabong Rio Pro competition, topping prodigious Australian Julian Wilson (AUS), 23, and Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, on his way to triumph over Parkinson.

With Kelly Slater taking it home for the old school by securing a phenomenal 11th World Title, it was new school 17-year-old shredder Gabriel Medina that came good on the final day of the Rip Curl Pro Search, taking home his second event win despite having competed in just four ASP World Tour stops as an official member of the 2011 roster. The young Brazilian has already been tipped to take a World Title by Kelly Slater and on current form, who can argue.
