Diamonds Are Forever? Here’s What Happens When You Put A $4,000 Diamond In A Hydraulic Press

Thousands of years from now, future generations will be searching through the rubble left behind by human civilisation. In amongst that wreckage, they’ll discover a thing. That thing, and you heard it here first, will be a hydraulic press. Not just any hydraulic press, you understand. THE hydraulic press.  The hydraulic press; star of everyone’s favourite YouTube channel – Hydraulic Press Channel.

The scavengers will look at the hydraulic press and wonder how on earth it’s survived so long when everything else around it has crumbled to dust. Of course, at this stage in our timeline, His Majesty Donald Trump the VIII will have already blown up the internet so they’ll literally be no way for anyone to bathe in the glow of the YouTube videos it featured in. We pity these people of the future, because to live in the time of the Hydraulic Press Channel is truly a wonderful thing.

If you think we’re overstating the toughness of the hydraulic press, watch what happens when it’s confronted with a $4,000 diamond. Now, if you paid attention to your science lessons at school you’ll know that diamonds are an incredible strong substance because of their giant molecular structure.

Every single carbon atom that makes up a diamond is covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms. What this means, in layman’s terms, is that a lot of energy is needed to separate the atoms in a diamond because covalent bonds are strong and diamond contains a lot of covalent bonds. The Hydraulic Press Channel has made a mockery of all this science talk, however, by making the 1.2 carat diamond look like a particularly crumbly bit of soft cheese.
