DJI first had a crack at moving into the action camera world with the Osmo Action. To us, it looked very similar to the kit produced by the kings of the action sports world, GoPro. Now though, for 2022, it’s fair to say that DJI have gone back to the drawing board with this new and extremely innovative camera. It’s called the DJI Action 2.

Build

Aside from Insta360’s modular designs, we’ve never really seen an action cam sporting this much versatility. The Action 2 is made up from two different modules: a camera cube and a LCD screen / battery cube.

The camera cube is what houses all the filming gubbins, with a small battery, LCD screen and internal storage to offer up to five minutes of filming when used alone. For longer stints filming, you can then attach the screen module to the camera which boosts the filming time to 160 minutes and offers external Micro SD storage.

These modules are all connected via a simple (yet surprisingly secure) magnet system that features a quick release system. Mounting the camera is also pretty simple, with a design that looks similar to GoPro’s signature mounting pattern of two tabs that can slot into various mounts.

The magnetic quick release system opens up a few handy mounting systems too, such as a wearable necklace for a first person view, a remote control extension pole, mini tripods and a nifty headstrap mount.

Video Quality

Taking a look at the video quality, you’ve got a 1/1.7 inch CMOS sensor (which is a step up from the 1/2.3” sensor found on the Osmo) and an ultra-wide 155 degree lens that’s able to kick out some pretty impressive resolutions, considering the plucky size. These resolutions include up to 120fps when shooting in 2.6 and 4K, and up to 240fps in 1080p.

The Action 2 has DJI’s ‘HorizonSteady’ technology built into it. This tech essentially takes the footage you’re shooting, applies a crop and uses a fancy stabilisation algorithm to detect (and correct) any potential shot-ruining wobbles. This tech is pretty standard stuff in the action cam world, but it’s great to see DJI nailing their version of this camera trickery.

All in all the DJI Action 2 is an extremely versatile action cam that’s able to get a wide range of shots, thanks to its modular design and clever magnetic mounting system. Its wide FOV, durable construction and precise stabilisation make it a fantastic action cam for resort use. If you’re not after the best picture quality possible, and would rather have a versatile camera, the DJI Action 2 has to be at the top of your buying list.
