If you love football, you’ll have no doubt played a match or two on at least one edition of the FIFA video game franchise. Heck, even if you hate football with the fire and the fury of 2,000 exploding suns we’d still wager our favourite hat that you’ve played at least one game of FIFA in your time.  It’s a rite of passage, especially for men of a certain age.

But, what about the skiers, the snowboarders, and the people with a passion for BASE jumping and wingsuit flying? What game are they supposed to play while they’re nine beers down on a lads night, splattered with curry stains, and looking for something to distract them before sleep consumes them? Seriously, what game are they supposed to play? Sure, they could play FIFA. Yeah, that’d be fine. But that wouldn’t put them in touch with the action sport they love, would it? No. It would not. No. It. Would. Not.

A video-game shaped answer, however, might just have arrived in the form of Steep. Steep, developed by Ubisoft, is set to be the world’s first truly open-world mountain-based game featuring skiing, snowboarding, wing-suiting and paragliding. Pro BASE Jumper and Skydiver Luke Aikens, freestyle ski champion Kevin Rolland, and Sammy Luebke the snowboarder are some of the names already tied to the game (with more surely set to follow).

Steep will be set on a mountain in the Alps, and give players the chance to get squads together online and shred up the slopes as part of a multi-sport team. Ideally of course, this game would come out in the summer season and help us cope in the months when Alpine snow is in short supply; a stop-gap to tide us over until winter kicks off for real, and we’re up in the mountains doing this sort of thing for real. The game will actually be released on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC in December 2016.
