Plastic is becoming a bigger problem than ever before. From littering our oceans to filling the stomachs of marine life, it’s a big issue that isn’t going to go away without some serious action.

One woman is taking it upon herself to raise awareness about plastic pollution – not just in our oceans but in the UK‘s rivers and canals.

Lizzie Carr is embarking on a mission to become the first person to successfully paddle a SUP board the length of England via. connected waterways, using entirely human powered means.

“[Our canals] are currently under threat from plastic pollution and debris that, if we don’t address soon, will compromise the beauty and quality of our experiences along the canals,” she says.

She started the 400 mile journey on Wednesday 11 May 2016 and hopes to cover the distance in three weeks. Lizzie will be carrying 30kg of equipment with her, including a tent and supplies.

She started the journey on the River Wey and will travel north through Oxford and Coventry before entering the Stoke On Trent canals, then following the River Douglas and onto River Ribble, ending up in the Lake District.

“This challenge is a way to reclaim our waterways in the hope that people care, fall back in love, and to take action against the problems we’re facing with plastic pollution,” says Lizzie.

You can track Lizzie’s journey in real time on her website lizzieoutside.co.uk. You can also follow her journey on her Instagram account @lizzie_outside and on Twitter @lizzo010. Share your plastic findings with Lizzie by using the hashtag #SuperSUPEngland.
