Will These Battery-Powered Goggles Revolutionise Skiing?

Hours spent demisting on the mountain could be behind you

Fogged up goggles can be a nightmare on the mountain. For as long as people have thrown themselves down the piste, days have been ruined by goggles misting up and spoiling the fun.

The science is simple. Warm air from your head hits the lens one side, cold air from the mountain hits the other. This disparity in temperature causes water molecules to form. This is fog.

The fog then stops you from seeing the annoying French kid on snowblades that’s suddenly stopped three metres in front of you. Before you know it, ski patrol are bollocking you.

But … my goggles!” you protest.

Regardez ou vous allez, stoopid ross bif!” they reply, grumpily.

For years, the goggle industry has tried everything from air vents, to anti-fog pigments, to tiny electric fans in a bid to make a truly fog-free goggle. Now, Abominable think they have finally cracked it.

Dubbed the F.Bom, the new goggles have tiny heating elements installed into the lens that warm it just enough to equalise the two opposing air temperatures, resulting in hours of fog free shredding.

It works pretty much like the heated rear window on a car. The difference is that the heating elements are so tiny you cant see them, so your vision isn’t distorted or impeded at all.

If you want to get your hands on them, you will face a little wait. Abominable want to get them out for October 2015, but that’s dependent on them raising the £30,000 they claim to need on KickStarter.

They’ve raised around about £6,000 to date, so if you’ve got a a few hundred quid burning a hole in your wallet, you could bag yourself a pair early.
