Jenny Jones: Olympic Snowboard Bronze Medal Winner Exploring Iceland by Splitboard

Sponsored feature: What Jenny did next...

Jenny Jones is a snowboarder who has done it all. Over the course of her career she’s won two X Games golds and a silver; she’s filmed major video parts; she’s appeared on magazine covers; she’s stood on the podium at almost every contest worthy of the name, and of course in February last year she stomped that near-perfect run in the inaugural Olympic slopestyle competition in Sochi to win a bronze medal – the first ever by a Brit on snow.

Given she’s been there and done that, you might imagine that the lustre of snowboarding might be wearing off a bit for Jenny. That she’d find it hard to maintain the stoke. Such a reaction would surely be perfectly understandable. Which is why her latest video, filmed as part of Oakley’s One Obsession campaign, is so refreshing.

Shot on location in Iceland earlier this year, it shows Jenny buzzing to be back on her board, as in love with the sport as she ever was, and finding new ways to fuel her stoke. Shortly after she won the medal, Mpora had a chat to Jenny about what came next and she explained that one of the things she wanted to do was “just go on trips” and ride without any particular pressure to turn it on for one run.

This is essentially exactly what she’s doing here – heading off into the Icelandic wilderness with her splitboard and just shredding for the fun of it – miles away from the contest circuit which made her a household name.

As she puts it in the film: “It is snowboarding, but it’s just things that my eyes haven’t seen much of.” And the thrill of perfecting new skills and trying different things brings its own rewards.

“Some parts of it I’m still so novice at, she says. I feel like I’m constantly learning,” she explains. “I think that’s what a lot of people get a kick out of in life and as you get older it’s almost a bit harder to find those things. And so to keep finding them within my own sport is brilliant.”

Clearly, the lustre of snowboarding has not worn off a bit for Jenny, and she’s just as stoked on riding as she ever was. It’s not just about learning new skills either, it’s also reconnecting with the simple pleasures of snowboarding.

“Making it to the top and then riding down is just such a good feeling,” she says. Surely a sentiment that any snowboarder, even a complete beginner, can relate to. So to see someone who’s done it all still getting that same buzz is awesome.
