New Zealand Are Ditching Their Flag, And Might Be Replacing It With One Of These

The New Zealand government wants YOU to design them a new national flag.

Flag Of New Zealand.

New Zealanders are on the lookout for a new flag. But rather than go hunting for one, in some bizarre safari park where sentient flags run free, they’ve decided to turn it into a design competiton of sorts.

The government website for New Zealand is currently chockablock with potential flag ideas. Any old Tom, Dick, or Harry can upload a design. As a result of this, the online gallery is currently a real hodgepodge of brilliance, brilliantly shit, and just plain shit.

The current flag of New Zealand was adopted in 1902 (see above). Debates about changing the flag have been raging, as much as a flag-debate can rage, for several decades now. Those in favour of a new flag argue that the union flag-centric design on the existing flag is too similar to Australia’s flag. In fairness, they’re almost identical.

The referendum for a new flag will have two stages. These will take place in 2015, and 2016. If you’re interested in flags and, or, New Zealand; you’ve come to the right place. We’ve compiled together, for your viewing pleasure, some of our favourite designs so far.
