One of those days – Candide Thovex

You can pick up a serviceable helmet camera these days for about what you would pay for a reasonable standard ski helmet. This is a great development, because it adds a whole new dimension to photography, as well as to your extreme sport of choice. Gone are the days when you had to endure incredulous looks from your friends as you fill them in on that incredible run or ride you had when you happened to be out on your own. After all, nobody can say you’re lying when you have cast iron proof in high definition video.

It’s a phenomenon which hasn’t escaped the elite skiing fraternity, and French professional skier, film-maker and entrepreneur Candide Thovex is no exception. Here he is in hit 2013 film One of Those Days. We join Thovex out on the peaceful slopes of his home resort La Clusaz in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, with his friend Aziz Benkrich (looking rather swish in a pair of eye-catching red salopettes). He pulls off some pretty amazing jumps, backflips and turns on some unforgiving looking, and fairly rocky, terrain. If we’re honest, watching from this vantage point is probably as close as most of us are likely to get to skiing at this standard ourselves.

There’s a twist at the end which we won’t go into too much detail about. Let’s just say the authorities are involved, perhaps not entirely in the manner you might expect. Clearly Thovex didn’t get himself into too much trouble though, as he was able to release a follow-up in 2015’s One of Those Days 2, which was arguably even more popular.
