Patagonia Better Sweater | Review

This Patagonia mid-layer is environmentally sound, comfortable, and can keep up with the worst conditions. No wonder they call it the Better Sweater

The Patagonia Better Sweater is not just any other fleece. It’s a fleece which is quite evidently, even just from the look of it, built to be a serious bit of outdoors kit. Look closer and you’ll find it’s a fleece that follows up on those initial impressions as well.

Behind the sweater-knit face there’s a moisture-wicking fleece interior. What this means is that it’ll keep you comfy in the warm and cosy in the cold. And that’s it probably going to be the first garment you end up reaching for every time you’re about to leave the house.

“It’s made in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner, it’s comfortable, and it can keep up with the worst of conditions.”

This works just as well as a top layer when it’s not raining as it does as a layer beneath a shell jacket in the cold and wet. It also doesn’t look half bad down the coffee shop either. It features hand-warming pockets and a stand-up collar designed for neck comfort. The fleece is designed to hold shape too and move with your body. If you’re out on the mountain and you’re wearing this, you’re not going to have a problem with comfort.

You can sleep soundly at night knowing that the Better Sweater is produced in compliance with Patagonia’s eco-friendly commitments as well. The heathered polyester fleece is dyed in such a way that reduces the use of dyestuffs, energy and water and it’s put together with Fair Trade Certified sewing (which means the people who put in the effort to make it were paid a fair wage to do so).

We tested the Better Sweater fairly extensively in the Brecon Beacons National Park in a range of different weather conditions, and our model loved it so much she basically refused to take it off for the entire duration of the shoot.

Effectively, the sweater is a prime example of exactly what you should expect from Patagonia. It’s made in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner, it’s comfortable, and it can keep up with the worst of conditions. Which is probably why they gave it that name…
