It’s fair to say that Italian-based Roxa ski boots have risen in popularity in recent years. With skiers like Glen Plake, Aurélien Ducroz and Matthias Giraud on their books, the company has a few legendary freeriders buckling into their boots. Much of their popularity is down to their knowledge and experience in creating a solid three piece cabrio boot. Take this beauty for example, it’s called the R3 130 Ti and it’s brilliant.

Build

Just to make things clear for those who might not be aware, a three piece design features, you guessed it, three sections of shell pieces that work together to produce the stiffness and support you require when arcing turns.

They’re different to a more traditional two piece boot as much of the stiffness from the boot comes from the tongue unit (whereas it comes from the wraparound cuff on a two piece). This gives three piece boots a unique flex pattern. If you’ve ever heard riders bigging up the flex of their Full Tilt kicks then you’ll understand that this all comes from the progressive three piece design Full Tilt make use of.

This Grilamid shell features a pretty innovative two piece hinged tongue design. This means the tongue can easily hinge backwards to provide an improved stride (up to 52 degrees). When you’re snapped back into ski mode, this design means that the tongue can maintain contact with your leg right across the tongue; providing excellent shock absorption (on top of the already great shock absorption a three piece boot offers).

The shell can be locked down via three buckles: one over the forefoot, another over the instep and a large powerstrap buckle that can be released to open up the boot for improved touring efficiency.

The ski / hike mechanism is pretty similar to other three piece designs (see Full Tilt / K2) that feature a simple metal block which can be flipped down to provide solid rearward support. When flipped up, the metal block lifts out of the way and walk mode is engaged. The nice combination of this walk mode design and single upper buckle makes for some really quick and simple transitions.

The R3 130 comes packing an Intuition liner as standard which can, of course, be heat moulded for a bit of quick customisation. You’ve got the choice between two different liners to go for: either an I.R. tongue liner, or I.R. wrap liner.

These liners look pretty similar to what Intuition usually produce, but Roxa say that the liners have been “specifically designed to integrate with the R3 platform”. What we do know is that Intuition makes some of the best liners in the business, so we can definitely get behind this choice.

In this case, the R3 130 takes this traditional three piece design and brings it into the modern world with a handy design tweak. They’ve created a 130 flex freeride boot with a pretty handy walk mode (you really do love to see it). While the walk mode isn’t best in class, the downhill performance and low weight of the boot make it a solid contender for freeriders looking to earn their turns.
