Scarpa joining forces with Bode Miller is a bit of a match made in heaven, isn’t it? On paper this combination is a pretty hard one to beat. We’re talking nearly 100-years of ski boot making heritage from Scarpa mixed in with one of the most successful American downhill skiers of all time.

One of the first products to come out of this partnership is the new Scarpa 4-Quattro XT. It’s a four buckle boot that brings together all the downhill knowledge from Bode (he’s known for ripping GS gates on an old three-piece Full Tilt boot) to create an extremely lightweight ski touring boot that upholds some best in class downhill performance.

As the name makes it blatantly obvious, the 4-Quattro features a four-buckle design. Kind of like a hybrid alpine / touring boot, Scarpa has retired the successful Freedom SL boot in favour of these electric blue kicks. The difference? 395 gram weight savings (per boot) and a flex rating of 130 instead of 130. Let’s see how Scarpa (and Bode) have achieved this.

Scarpa 4-Quattro XT Build

The upper is made from a Grilamid and Pebax mix (that Scarpa has become known for) and makes use of a hybrid three piece overlap design for a best of both worlds design that doesn’t look too dissimilar to their classic Maestrale series of downhill-focused touring boots.

More bits borrowed from the Maestrale series are the simple buckle design, which features a cable system that wraps around the ladders to provide a secure fit.

Although a lot of the focus has been on the weight of boot, the walk mode is a pretty innovative design and certainly one unique within Scarpa’s touring boot range. Rather than opting for their standard flip up / down buckle lock system, they’ve gone for a lever that slides a metal block laterally to engage the ski / walk mode. It’s kind of similar to what Full Tilt (now K2) did with their Ascendant.

As has always been the way with Scarpa boots, Scarpa has continued their partnership with Vancouver-based liner manufacturer, Intuition. We’ve always been big fans of this as Intuition makes some of the best liners in the business.

In this case, the heat moldable 4PRO Flex XT liner features a toughened section of foam around the cuff for improved downhill performance. There’s also flexible neoprene sections behind the achilles, and around the toes, for touring comfort.
