Velodrome Victory: Great Britain Win Third Straight Olympic Team Sprint Gold At Rio 2016

When track cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy stepped down from competitive sport, there were fears that Team GB would never be able to fill the void left by his absence. Last night, these fears proved to be entirely unfounded as the trio of Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny (who claimed his fourth Olympic gold), and Callum Skinner bagged victory against world champions New Zealand in the Team Sprint.

Many were unconvinced that Skinner had what it took to replace the six-time Olympic champion Hoy as the team’s third man, but a blisteringly fast final lap from Skinner showed to everyone that he had the mettle to step up when it really mattered. Britain have now won three Olympic Team Sprints in a row.

New Zealand were the favourites going into the final, but the British lads were more than a match for them; setting an Olympic record with a time of 42.440 seconds (New Zealand finished in 42.542 seconds). Earlier that day, Britain’s women set a world record in the Team Pursuit.

If things carry on like this, it’s looking like it could be another very successful Olympics in the velodrome. In London, four years ago, Team GB won eight out of the ten available golds in track cycling. At Beijing 2008, they won seven.
