The Quiksilver King of the Groms quarters and semis were run today at La Graviere beach in Hossegor. Despite the small conditions – obviously not good enough for the pros - the kids found a nice playground for their speed and radical surfing in small but funny waves.
Quiksilver’ young guns impressed the spectators and displayed their skills in the small barrels. In the first quarter final, Australia’s Mikey Wright and Italian prodigy Leo Fioravanti dominated the heat and eliminated Brazilian surfers Victor Bernado and Igor Moraes.
In the second one, Oneill Massin and Kanoa Igarashi qualified for the semifinal putting an end to Takumi Nakamura (JAP) and John Mel (USA) experience in France.
In semifinals, the young Australian Mikey Wright dominated his teammate Leo Fioravanti thanks to solid backside maneuvers awarded by one of the day’s highest scores : 16.50 points out of 20 against 7.13 pts for the Italian.
Owen’s and Tyler’s young brother qualifies himself for the final where he will face another rising star Kanoa Igarashi. The American rookie qualified for his first King of the Groms International final after defeating easily Oneill Massin (Tah) by 12.50 vs 2.50 pts. Kanoa expressed his deep satisfaction after his victory : “I waited all year for this event ! Since I lost in quarter finals last year, I was just counting the minutes until this day. I finally made it to this final ! I’m so stocked".
Both finalists Wright and Igarashi will have to wait for tomorrow’s call to compete.
