BUCHAN AND LONSDALE RIDING HIGH IN DARE 2B BRITISH HALFPIPE CHAMPS
The BRITS Snow & Music Festival, 23rd - 30th March, Tignes, France
Murray Buchan (22, Edinburgh) and Emma Lonsdale (28, Settle) reigned supreme in a snowy Tignes at the Dare 2b British Halfpipe Championships on the fourth day of competition at the BRITS 2013.
The UK's best halfpipe skiers braved the heavy snow to ride the Tignes Superpipe today, which was used just last week at the European X Games. Conditions in the pipe were tricky for the riders and after two qualification runs it was decided that it would be these runs that would decide the titles as the snow continued to fall making the pipe slow to ride and visibility poor.
Despite the conditions it didn't stop Buchan pulling out a phenomenal run which consisted of an unnatural 900, followed by a jaw dropping 1260 which sent the crowd wild. He then continued his winning run with a right sided 720 tail grab into a switch 720 japan. No-one could compete with the Scottish rider who is on course to represent Great Britain at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, despite strong performances from both Peter Speight (20, Sheffield) who took second spot and Rob Machon (20, Sheffield) who placed third.
Speight, who has been training with the Great Britain team in Breckenridge, USA, put in a solid first run but put a hand down on his second run. He pulled off some solid tricks, however, including a right sided 900 and a right sided 720. Machon, who is sponsored by Dare 2b, showed how hard work can pay off and in his usual work-horse style treated the spectators to two smooth runs where he performed a switch 720 and a clean solid 540 truck driver amongst other stylish tricks.
Buchan said of his victory: "I didn't expect that much coming here straight from Spain and the World Cup. I was pretty tired and it's been a long season so I'm really glad to win. I was wary of what Pete (Speight) might pull out of the bag so it was a tough competition and because I have been skiing with Pete all winter I knew what he was capable of so I was quite nervous to see what he had."
In the female competition it was a similar story with none of the other girls able to get close to veteran Em Lonsdale who pulled off a top class run which consisted of a mute grab, a critical alley-oop into a japan alley-oop, a left 540 spin and right side 360.
Two young skiers in the form of Molly Summerhayes (15, Sheffield) and yesterday's slopestyle winner Madi Rowlands (12, Rochester) took second and third place respectively, showcasing the thriving young British female ski talent. Both performed super smooth runs with Summerhayes pulling off a downhill 540 on her second run and Rowlands performing some clean alley-oop 360s.
Lonsdale was stoked with her performance: "I am pretty happy with the win. I think going big, getting out of the pipe in the conditions and some solid grabs secured it for me. The pipe was really nice coming off the back of the X Games and Tignes is a fantastic place for the BRITS."
The Dare 2b Halfpipe Championships was the final event in the British Freeski Championships and was a fitting conclusion to a week of exceptional freeski competition.
