Volcom Stone's WITP 2013 | AUSTRIA | 7 September

A Skateboarding video by Volcom - 791 views

Sharing borders with the river Inn and the typical mountainous landscape of the alps, Skatepark Wörgl is probably one of the most picturesque parks in Austria. With its remote location in the Inntal, Tirol, one may find perfect features for a skate-weekend: campfires, hammock and tents spots, and a number of bowls to shred. Roman Astleitner and local Skateshop Pilotto joined forces with the city council in 2007 to pour some concrete at this remote area to create Wörgl Skatepark. With the finalisation of the new park section it was time for Volcom to return to the sunny concrete slopes of Wörgl after its first WITP visit in 2008. After camping at the bowl the team awoke to a crispy clear morning, promising a hot and wicked day; perfect conditions to run the Wild In The Parks AUSTRIA. The park is naturally divided into three areas including the Spanish tube with extension, the new flow section with the quaterpipe and the old section with hips, banks & the spine. As the park was merely getting crowded, Monster Energy supplied refreshments and a chill out area. Everything was somewhat falling into places, and as the last skateboarders from Innsbruck arrived, it was time to start the contest! The first heat was basically a mixture of the -14/+15 division, as the participation level was rather medium in these categories. Amongst the riders were some locals who certainly did not leave any stone unturned in order to show their knowledge of the park to the judges (Heiko Jäger, Chris Hoch & Felix Gundrum). During this heat, Twelve-year-old Tyler Edtmayer was popping very mature bs methods in the quarter, as well as a few solid handplants over the spin. At the end of the day Tyler landed save and sound on the first place of the under 14 Division. Meanwhile in the +15 category the guys were ripping the shit out of any transition and multiple times surprised the audience with footplant combinations. Mike Brunner finally found the perfect combination of mixing, classic old school “evergreen” tricks with new school tricks such as nollie bigspin heelflips on the bank. In between the qualification heats and the finals, our friends from Monster found some spare change (100€) in their back pocket and were willing to donate it to the gnarliest racer in Wörgl. Thus a parcours was set up and within a second, a handful of death-defying skaters were ready to enter the “Monster Rat Race”. Patrick Freitag used his Park knowledge wisely and made it to the 100€ before the rest of the gang. Besides one or two crashes luckily everyone survived the race. As the finalists of the open division were full of purpose and already shuffling their feet, the finals started afst and furious. It was a festival of tricks; fs/bs crailslides revert, 360 Flips, bs methods, wallie 50-50s and bs 5-0s. Everyone was having a good time and the chaps in crowd were bluffing their cheeks as one hammer was dropped after another. Too many, I’d say too many, to go further into detail. Roman Astleitner hit every possible transfer and well deserved, landed on the first place of the WITP Austria. Park local Patrick Freitag happened to drop the gnarliest trick on the extension, a bs bluntslide, and got ranked 2nd. As a well-known visitor to Wörgl, Stefan Moser boosted tricks such as bs 360 tucknee over the spine and big ass bs methods over the hip, which was rewarded with the 3rd place. In other words, those guys were on fire. With the beautiful Austrian sunshine and an epic scenery, our friends gathered around us and a super fun park in front of us, it is save to say that the WITP – Austria was a blast. Yeah to everyone who joined us last weekend.
