Port Waikato - Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour - THE FINAL EVENT

The final event was held at the mouth of the mighty 'Waikato River' in the sleepy little town of 'Port Waikato'. Exposed to the grunt of the Tasman sea the beach break offers several sand banks that work on all tides and at times the surrounding hills give shelter from Southerly wind's. Only an hour from Auckland city its a hidden gem offering world class waves on its day.

Before the Hyundai Pro Longboard tour came along Port Waikato’s last major surf event was in 1994, but that dry spell ended when the longboard event arrived in 2006 where perfect barreling 4ft waves greeted the surfers. Since then the event has returned every year to witness the final stop of the tour.

2011 saw the West coast come alive with a relentless 2m swell pounding the sand banks which made for a very contestable competition!
