Downpatrick Moto Park held RD 1 of the Adult Ulster Championship on Saturday past (26th March).
They couldn't of asked for better weather as the sun was out for most of the day. Thanks to the Orr's, the track was in awesome shape. They had give it a facelift by changing most of the layout adding a double - double section, jumps on corners and split bumps going into corners to try an make different lines which worked. I never heard one complaint about the track.
ONE PROBLEM - The racing ran on till 7pm with the Non-Qualifiers races being cut from the third block of racing. This left them only getting two 8min+1 lap races which some thought was not exactly value from money. Only way to fix this? Start exactly on 9am. Anyone late to signing on DOES NOT RIDE - SIMPLE. That’s my opinion anyways. I wasn't even riding and i was there just after 8. I live over an hour away from the track so no excuses people. Set the alarm clock a bit earlier. ha-ha.
Ok so back to the racing. The racing was good. Apart from the day being long and people leaving early there was a large crowd but the good weather definitely helped with that one.
Everyone i spoke to over the winter all said that this year was going to be a big year. We had Philip McCullough returning from retirement, we had double Ulster Championship winner Robert Hamilton coming to retain his titles............ NO, they decided to go and get hurt a few weeks before the first round and did not ride.
We all hear of the people hitting the gym, putting in the practice laps and how much faster these people are than last year but you know what........ It was the same old riders doing the winning and running in the top 5. Wayne Garrett showed up and went home with 6 out of 6 wins in the MX1 and MX2 class. He has momentum and the other guys need to watch out.
