About Wakeskating

Wakeskating is similar to wakeboarding, with the major difference being that the rider’s feet are not held on to the board. The top of the wakeskate is much like a skateboard, covered with a grippy foam or tape. Wakeskate riders usually wear skateboard shoes to protect their feet. The typical wakeskater rides at speeds of 15-20 miles an hour, however, the speed is dependent on the rider’s build and skill, as well as water conditions. Wakeskating tricks draw more influence from skateboarding, while wakeboard tricks draw more influence from snowboarding.

Wakeskating has its roots in early 70’s and 80’s sports like freeboarding and wakesurfing, but due to industry preference for boards with bindings, wakeboarding quickly surpassed wakeskating in popularity. In the mid 90’s, wakeskating once again began to gain popularity because it does not require an expensive boat or a large wake, wakeskaters can even be pulled behind a jet ski. New materials and equipment are continually being introduced and are helping to boost wakeskating’s popularity.
