Callum Skinner Tells Brexit Campaigners Where to Go When They Try to Claim Olympic Success

One of the stranger side effects of Team GB’s impressive Olympic success is that assorted Brexit campaigners have been trying to claim credit – as if the results had anything to do with the vote to leave the European Union.

Witness this utter tripe from UKIP supporter and trigger-happy Twitter botherer David Hadley:

A couple of days ago the Leave.EU campaign (the nastier unofficial campaign supported by Nigel Farage) tried to muscle in on the action by posting a video featuring various Olympic medallists.

However their attempt to bask in reflected glory backfired when Scottish cyclist Callum Skinner shut them down.

Skinner got a silver behind Jason Kenny in the individual sprint and won gold in the team sprint with Kenny and Phillip Hindes. Ironically Hindes, who set the team up for the gold with his blisteringly fast first lap, is in fact an example of how awesome the EU can be. Born in Germany to a British father he holds dual nationality and speaks German as his first language, as well as fluent English.

Whether or not that motivated Skinner’s response, he got a lot of love for slapping down the Brexiteers, with many people following his lead in tweeting EU flags.


Others weighed in by pointing out how ridiculous the idea of conflating sporting success with the referendum was.

And calling out the Leave campaign for trying to do so

But mostly there was just a lot of love for Callum Skinner. Damn right too.
