Namibian Rider Dan Craven "Live Tweets" Olympic Road Race... While Competing In It
"Cross wind. Bugger that. Drinks anyone? How about a caipirinha."
Twitter lost its mind over the weekend as Namibian road cyclist Dan Craven started live tweeting the Olympic road race – while competing in it.
Of course, what we actually mean when we say that ‘Twitter lost its mind’ is that the users of the popular social media ‘Twitter’ lost their mind. Twitter itself doesn’t have a mind. If it did have a mind, then all of our worst nightmares would be coming true.
But anyway. Back on topic.
Craven’s first tweet was sent 16 minutes after the race kicked off from account handle @DanFromNam, talking about breakaways from the peloton, and the Twittersphere erupted like my mountain of vomit upon typing the word ‘Twittersphere’ as soon as he hit send.
Of course, the more rulebook-educated road cycling fans will have clocked on to the fact that had it indeed been Dan behind the keyboard, he would’ve been disqualified from the race.
It’s against the UCI regulations to use a mobile phone during a race – which incidentally is also what I keep telling my mum when she asks why I haven’t called in the past four hours.
Some Twitter users were getting mega curious though, asking Dan how it was possible, to which he wonderfully responded:
Dan saw it through to the end of the race though, working his way around some other UCI regulations, such as the rule which means you can’t mention your sponsors...
There was a sign soon after though for any still in doubt that it definitely wasn’t Dan behind the tweets – it was actually girlfriend Collyn Ahart.
Good effort Collyn. That was entertaining.
