Days Like These
Nobody's noticed, but all the best musicians have been female for a good fifteen years now. Not only that, but girls are out performing boys in exam results, and the women's England Football Team is achieving better results in competitions than their male counterparts. If this trailer for the new film from London-based skateboarder and freelance photographer Jenna Selba is anything to go by, the world of skateboarding could soon be about to follow suit.
Jenna has been avid skater since 1998, when, as she explains on her website, she bought her first board on the 'cheap' via an American magazine. Unfortunately, customs were apparently on the lookout for skateboards that day, so she got stung on import duty and ended up paying no less than they would have charged at her local skate shop. Undeterred, Jenna honed her board skills while studying Photographic Arts in Newport, and combining these two passions for skateboarding and film was a natural next step.
In 2009 Jenna created As If, And What?, the first ever European skate film in to feature female stars. The film proved to be a huge success, and now a follow-up, entitled Days Like These, has been produced and is scheduled for release in late 2015. Following on from the success of her debut, Jenna's new film features a selection of the industry's top female riders from around the UK and Ireland. The project visits some of the legendary women who have helped shape the industry as we know it today, and will give an insight into the rider's backgrounds (alongside loads of amazing skating, of course). Who knows, perhaps when Jenna is still producing groundbreaking films in a few years time, the fact that all the skaters are women won't even be an issue?
