Skateboarder Dylan Rieder Has Died, Aged 28
Skateboarder passed away following a battle with Leukaemia
Sad news has reached us that Dylan Rieder has died as a result of complications with Leukaemia.
At times like this, the temptation to stray into rampant hyperbole is great, but what's irrefutable is that his passing is truly a loss to skateboarding. But to simply call Rieder a skateboarder – to throw him in with everybody else that’s ever stood on a board - is to do him a disservice.
Dylan Rieder had a fluid style when skating, a grace that belied his explosive power. He was genuinely iconic, in so much as he represented an entire generation – not just of skateboarders – but of 20 something’s, call them millenials, hipsters, whatever buzzy phrase is in favour today.
His iconic status lead Rieder to transcend skateboarding, and found the mainstream taking an interest in him, exemplified by the advertising campaign he starred in for fashion house DKNY in 2014.
But it’s on a skateboard that we will remember Dylan Rieder, because that’s where it felt like he was somehow ours. That achingly, impossibly cool style that seems so effortless. He was our skateboarder.
A statement released by those close to Dylan read:
"Today, October 12th, 2016, surrounded by family and friends, Dylan Joseph Rieder passed away due to complications with Leukemia. His passion for life, art, music, fashion and skateboarding has always been contagious. Dylan will be remembered by all as a loving son, brother and friend."
Rieder’s family have asked that, for those wishing to do so, donations be made in Dylan’s memory to Dr. Stephen Forman, an international expert in leukemia, lymphoma and bone marrow transplantation from the City of Hope Cancer Treatment Center.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Dylan Rieder.
