Back in November 2014, we wrote a short article about a young girl called Sky. She’s the seven year skateboarder who’s been taking the internet by storm.
In most ways, Sky is a pretty normal kid. She likes to have fun, eat lasagne, and if she could be one animal, it’d be a dolphin, “because they can surf all the time and jump really high" – two very valid reasons, we have to agree.
But Sky also happens to rather talented, and rather good at gathering attention as well. Between two videos uploaded on our Facebook of Sky shredding, she’s managed to rack up almost five million views and 50,000 shares, for very good reason too – she’s insanely rad!
When we were six or seven we were still falling off our bikes, refusing to eat vegetables and were hooked on watching Wacky Races (now that we think about it, not much has changed), but Sky is showing the world how it’s done and proving that anything is possible.
Last year, Sky flew out to California from her base in Japan to compete at Exposure 2015, the biggest all-female skateboarding event in the world. She finished third in the U14 category, and you can check out her run above.
Let us remind you again... She’s seven years old.
Sky has since been invited to ride at the Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic, a contest also in California, but unfortunately can’t afford to cover the costs of flying out and living there during the contest – so has set up a GoFundMe page to try and raise the cash.
“Some people tell me that I am one of the best little girl Skateboarders in the world," the page reads. “I don’t know about that because I’m still just 7."
Unfortunately, the contest is pretty close, on 23 January, and the GoFundMe hasn’t gotten off the ground. Safe to say the following passage on the GoFundMe page has all of our hearts breaking: “unfortunately, Even though I may be the best 7 yearold girl Skater on the world.. well, there is not much support for Girls Skateboarding, especially compared to boys."
It’d be awesome if there’s a sponsor out there who could send Sky to the contest, so if you’re reading this and could help out or know a sponsor who may be interested – hint, hint, get in touch with Sky and her family through the GoFundMe page!
We have a feeling that even if Sky doesn’t get out to California again this month though, she’ll be shredding on the big stage for a long time yet, and that there’s plenty of opportunities that lie ahead!
PS. Also check out Sky’s brother Ocean. He’s three/four years old and also absolutely rips on the skateboard. This is some A-game parenting right here:
This dude is called Ocean. He's three years old. ...And wait till you see how good his six year old sister is: https://mpora.com/articles/sky-skate-surf
