Is This Ski Resort In North Korea The Reason Kim Jong-Un Had His Uncle Executed?
According to reports, the Masikryong ski resort in North Korea has a dark secret at its heart.
"Families, hey? Who'd have 'em?"
It would seem this saying is particularly true if you happen to be related to the cheese-munching, North Korean, megalomaniac Kim Jong-Un. Blood might be thicker than water but if you're Kim Jong-Un, getting your own way trumps everything else.
In recent days, reports have emerged on the internet that suggest Kim Jong-Un's uncle (Jang Song-Thaek), who was executed at the end of 2013, was put to death because he openly disagreed with the dictator's desire to build a luxury ski resort rather than focus on sorting out some of the country's more pressing issues (i.e. famine).
The Masikryong ski resort, which opened its doors at the start of last year, was apparently constructed in just ten months. At the time of writing, it is North Korea's only ski resort. Kim Jong-Un ordered it to be built as part of a drive to increase annual foreign tourist numbers, from 200,000 to 1,000,000, by the year 2016.
It would seem, then, that 'Kimmy' (to his friends) likes skiing so much he was willing to kill his relatives for it. Don't get us wrong, we love hitting the powder as much as the next action sports website; we're just not convinced that we'd be willing to have people brutally executed in order to do it.
Of course, with the tight media restrictions blanketing the country, it's often difficult to separate fact from fiction. If these reports are true, however, we suggest Kim Jong-Un takes a long hard look in the mirror. Because if anyone requires some much-needed perspective on the world, it's the isolated man-child in charge of North Korea.
Skiing is awesome, and we imagine that building your own ski resort is awesome with added spoonfuls of awesomeness, but family is family. Don't kill family. In fact, don't kill anyone if you can help it.
Here, at the Mpora office, we very much consider ourselves to be anti-execution advocates (especially, if it just boils down to a disagreement over a new ski resort).
