Trailer For The Last King: Norwegian Film Combines Real History, Game Of Thrones, And Skiing
Everything you love about Game of Thrones, with additional skis.
It's no secret that, here at Mpora, we love Game of Thrones more than a cupboard filled with biscuits. In the past, we've written about G.O.T locations, discussed which sport each G.O.T character would be into, and even speculated on the fate of Jon Snow after season five's cliffhanger. Dragons, sword-fights, nudity, killer twists, beards, betrayal; this show has it all.
And, of course, what with Mpora being a popular action sports and adventure website; it's safe to presume that we enjoy sliding down powder-topped hills on skis and snowboards. Before today, however, we've had to cope with the soul-crushing reality that our passion for snow sports and our passion for quasi-medieval fantasy would forever remain separate.
Then we saw the trailer for 'The Last King', and our mood lifted considerably. That's because, if first impressions are anything to go by, 'The Last King' is going to bring together two of our favourite things in the world. And, what's more, it's got the big ginger dude from Thrones in it (Kristofer Hivju, who plays Tormund Giantsbane in G.O.T).
There's no denying that the trailer, voiced by a man who sounds like he's swallowed a bag of gravel to rid himself of a chest infection, is stupid. Everything about it looks stupid. And yet, we can't shake the feeling that it's so stupid it's genius. A ski movie...set in medieval times. Come on. Who wouldn't want to watch that?
Based on what Gravel McGravelVoice says during his voiceover, the plot centres around "traitors with dark desires" lurking in the shadows and hatching a plan to kill the "mo-NARCH" (it's pronounced "monarch).
Damn you, traitors with dark desires. Damn you all to hell. The good news is that "two devoted warriors" are going to be on hand to protect the "orphan heir to the throne and save their kingdom." It sounds like a load of silly old bollocks, doesn't it? The best kind of silly old bollocks.
Our favourite bit in the trailer, FYI, is when a load of skiers wearing full medieval armour leap into battle via a strategically well-placed kicker (see above). Yeah! Take that traitors with dark desires! An army of skiers are flying through the air, and they're going to serve up a big banquet of pain.
'The Last King' is due for release on the 17th of June. It's set during the Norwegian civil war era (1130-1240) and, believe it or not, is based on historical events that actually happened. According to the trailer's description on YouTube, this film is "the story of the escape that changed the history of Norway forever." Entertaining and educational? Someone get the popcorn.
